Well, this woman seems a bit strange to me, because i mean why does she stays almost her whole life at home?! I understand that she doesn't want to be that famous, but i think there are other ways to handle that you don't have to be on your own for the whole life. And honestly i really don't understand her poems. Even with the readerguide. Like what has hope to do with feathers? "hope" is the thing with feathers is the hardest poems from these three. and yes, why didn't she want to publish her poems. This reading assignment really confused me this time.
The lifestyle and poems of Emily Dickinson, and, of course, she herself, are very interesting. It has a deeper meaning for sure, but only she could tell us, what was going on in her life. My first thought about her isolation from others came from the very first poem "This is my letter to the World" which continues "That never wrote to Me" (p. 751), shows her disappointment in the world that wasn't interested in her. And, yes, i think, and this is obvious from her biography, the author herself is the speaker of her poems; she actually put her feelings, thoughts, and events from her life into the poems. She was "one of the richest and deepest ever lived on this continent" means that it wasn't that bad for her, and maybe she was even happy with the way of life she had! It is just better to be alone than be sociable and get hurted by people! Maybe she was even happier living like that! Not everybody needs everything and everybody to get to know happiness in his/ her life!
I think, Hope is the thing with Feathers, is just a comparison between Hope and a bird. I'm still not sure why she is using that comparison, but I do believe that is it. In the poem, Success is counted sweetest, I think she is simply saying that those who do not succeed look up to those who do. They believe that success is sweeter that no success. In the last poem, Much Madness is divinest Sense, Emily tells everyone that if they agree with madness being the divinest sense then they are not mad/crazy. She also tells her audience that if they dissagree with that statement then they are dangerous and will be killed.
emily dickinson has a unique and interesting style of writing. she pretty much just sticks to a formula, or blueprint in most of the poems we read. even though there are several different designs they are all similar. she wirtes mainly with extended metaphors being the main focus. she also writes in a vague, enigmatic way that each phrase has to be interpreted and analyzed, which is one of the reasons its been so hard for many people to understand.
Emily Dickinson had many different comparisons in her peoms. I also liked the poem "Hope is the thing with Feathers". She is very cazy/wierd for staying in her house most of her life. And I dont understand why she didn't want to be famous....
Her poems, to me, are deep. I really enjoyed reading "Hope is the thing with feathers". My reason for liking this one is because in a way, she kind of describes a dove. I cant really think how, but from what I know, Doves are a sign of hope, thats why They are sometimes used for many weddings to bring good hopes for the couple.
THE POEMS OF EMILY DICKSON ARE DIFFICULT ARE HARD FOR ME TO UNDERSTAND BECAUSE SHE USES METAPHORS AND ONE HAS TO READ DEEPER BETWEEN THE LINES. I LIKE HER POEMS BECAUSE EVEN THOUGH THEY ARE SHORT THEY HAVE A STRONG MEANING BEHIND THEM. MY FAVORITE POEM THE SUCCESS ONE. BECAUSE OF LINES 1 AND 2. "SUCCESS IS COUNTED SWEETEST, BY THOSE WHO NE'ER SUCCEED" -PIKACHU

Hopefully our lesson in class today will help you understand her poems.
I agree with you about her life-style however--very peculiar.
