This was a very insightful chapter we learned more about gatsby on page 66 about his personal history and then more of his love life and his motivations for his actions, like moving to west egg, buying that specific mansion across the bay,on page 74. im a bit confused on how much of this story is told by nick and how much is told by jordan. also toward the end on page 80 that nick is tired enough of not having a girl to do something about it.

In this chapter you learn a great deal more about Gatsby. Nick although feels that when Gatsby is telling him about his life that many of the things he says does not make sense. Also you learn that the main reason that Gatsby moved to West Egg and in that particular spot was to be closer to the love of his life, Daisy. Gatsby wants Nick to arrange a meeting where Gatsby gets to see Daisy in person so that they could be able to catch up. After Gatsby takes Nick around town Nick meets up with Jordan to talk more about Gatsby and what her and Gatsby was talkin about at his party.

I learned alot about Gatsby in this chapter. I also had a chance to listen to a few silly names. I was confused when Ms. Jordan was telling her story about what Gatsby wanted. I was confused because at one point I thought she was the narrator talking, but then I quickly remembered to look back in the story. It was interesting to find out why Gatsby was interested in him in the first place.

I still can not believe that he is that rich. Even if he got all this money from his dead family, it sounds so unrealostic. That he lived in all capitals of europe -paris, venice, rome and can buy himself everything he wants. I just can not imagine that.
And it seems weird that "he had waited five years and bought a mansion where he dispensed starlight to casual moths- so that he could "come over" to a strangeres garden"(p.78)and all this just for daisy!! Why can't he just act like a normal person, just contacting her in a normal way? I mean thatexplains the situation when he met Tom in this restaurant.

But i was thinking of this American Dream thing again, and i think for me it'S almost the way Gatsby lives. He has everything and knows a lot of known peole. Almost everybody knows him( if even with name), but he seems to live it.

In chapter four it seems to me that Nick knows alot of people. And now i see how jay Gatsby became so wealthy as he say "My family all died and i came into a good deal of money". I think Nick has big dreams because he continues to describe other people things appear to him and how nice thier things are. It really Gatsby who he looks at and i think Gatsby has the american dream.

I agree with most of everyone, in chapter four we are learning more about Jay Gatsby. So it was true that Gatsby lade his eyes on his beatiful girl who was just 18 at the time was in the war, then she went off and married someone(Tom). I think Nick should help Gatsby see Daisy because Tom is doing her so wrong, and unlike Tom I think Gatsby really wants to be with Daisy. Nick tells us that the reason Gatsby moves to West Egg is to be closer to Daisy. Yet still he hasn't seen her yet! But if he know Jordan, then why she didn't already make that arrangement??

Ok, like everybody else: in chapter IV we found out a lot more about Gatsby.
Now certain things are clear to me. For example the reason he makes all those parties. He just wants to forget everything bad that happened to him. Well, I don't think this is the best way to get rid of bad memories, but I can not change the story, right?
Well, it impressed me a lot! The whole time Gastby did everything just to meet Daisy and be with her again.
As he started telling his story to Nick, it seemed unbelievable that he had experienced so much and has been to so many places, but as Jordan started HER story, the individual puzzle pieces actually made a picture...
"Yeah, Gatsby is very careful about women. He would never so much as look at a friend's wife."(p. 72) that exactly explains why Gatsby didn't try to get closer to Daisy through Tom(get to know him, be friends), he could have started to like Tom and then it would be harder to get closer to "the love of his life" because he wouldn't like to hurt Tom. But Gatsby is a really smart one! And as it looks Nick isn't really against the idea to bring Jay and Daisy together, or maybe we are going to see his opinion about that later...
I totally(<-sorry) agree with Arielle, Gatsby seems to be the right one for Daisy. First I doubted this idea because Tom was not bad at the beginning either, but we can see that Jay Gatsby really knows what he wants. He wants to be with the woman who he fell in love with long time ago, and of whom he knew from the beginning that they belong together. He just doesn't give up his dream and his feelings about Daisy, I like that!
So, it is possible that he has been into something bad or unlawful, but come on, you can really see how serious he is about Daisy and him comming closer to each other.
I'm really REALLY curious about the letter that Daisy got the day before her wedding. Something tells me it was Gatsby, yep, sure it was him, but whaat?! It looks like it seriously hit her: "She wouldn't let go of the letter. She took it in the tub and squeezed it into a wet ball, and only let me leave it in the soap- dish when she saw that it was coming to pieces like snow."(p. 76) This reminds me of "...how her mother had found her packing her bag one winternight to go to New York and say good-by to a soldier(Gatsby) who was going overseas." (and later got a letter from him)... "After that she didn't play with soldiers any more,..." (both p. 75)- Daisy felt the same way about Jay as he felt about her, that's why she stopped to "play with soldiers", maybe she didn't want to be hurt again by losing somebody important to her, or she just found somebody (-> Gatsby) and doesn't need to look for anybody else... But still only one of them kept the promise (which was there for sure) that they are going to wait no matter how long and do everything to be together. At least one of them tries to do something about it (althought Daisy obviously still has feelings for Jay) and I'm glad Gatsby didn't leave it alone and did something (*more than that) to fulfill the promise they gave each other on the coast...
How romantic! =)

My, my, my. My fellow intellectuals you have all struck on such important points in Chapter IV. I am so impressed with all of your reflections. Doug and Itali—great job noticing the shift in narration; Alena—brilliant integration of a quote, you and Octavia also touched on the American Dream: great job; Arielle, I can’t wait to address your question in class; and Inna, I don’t know where to begin—splendid response.

All of you have done an exceptional job. It brings a tear to my eye. Keep it up!

I learned a lot about Gatsby in chapter four. It seems like Nick is finally getting to know the guy that was once "mysterious" to him. When they went to New York and Gatsby was telling Nick about his background it didn't seem to make any sense to Nick, he didn't really believe him. When I found out that Gatsby wasa in love with Daisy I was surprised! I would how "hulking" Tome will feel about this situation??...
I can't wait to read Chapter five.

It seems to me that gatsby is comeing to appear a little shady considering the type of people he associates with. You can also see that gatsby was telling the truth about his worldly exploits, according to that Wolfshien fellow. Although you cant trust Wolfsheims word to far since he seems to be some type of big time criminal.

Just like everyone else said in this chapter we learned a lot about Jay Gatsby. He claims, to be the son of wealthy, deceased parents from the Midwest. But all of his stories seems to be all a lie to Nick. Nick also seems like an incerdulous individual. At luch in New York City, Nick meets Meyer Wolfshiem. Gatsby reveals why he moved to the West Egg and why he throws the luxurious parties. Gatsby finally asks Nick to invite Daisy over for tea, so they can reunite. And Nick also realized why Gatsby had his hands up towards the green light(Daisy's dock).
