chapter 5 was basically about the recognition/reunion. in this chapter, it seem as though Gatsby is trying to please nick a little too hard.i noticed that Daisy did not know that Gatsby had such a wealthy lifestyle. why was Daisy crying? " Daisy's face was smeared...before a mirror." i also met Gatsby best friend,Mr.Dan Cody.i green light occurred again in this chapter. Gatsby and Daisy seem to be having a great time and they act like they is in love."his hand took hold of hers...was a deathless song."
I don't get why he so extremly nervous about not meeting Daisy for "five years next November". It seems pretty weird to me, I mean they are grown adults and I don't understand why it's such a big deal for Gatsby. "Gatsby, pale as death, with his hands plunged like weights in his coat pockets, was standing in a pudle of water glaring tragically into my eyes." (pg86) But then it turns out really good and it almost seems they are in love, because Gatsby tkaes Daisy's hand and they both are so released after a while that Daisy start crying because of little stupid things, like beautiful shirts and Gatsby starts to laugh without a reason.
In chapter five, there was alot off pleasing. Gasby was trying to get nick to go to coney island. He offered for somebody to come cut nicks grass. I became a little confused when it switched back to past tense then went back to present.
"Turning a corner, I aw that it was gatsby's house, lit from tower to cellar". Was Gatsby's house on fire or was nick just over exxagerating about how beautiful gatsby's house was.
In chapter 5 we witnessed Daisy's and Gatsby's reunion after almost 5 years! In context we could see Gatsby from a different aspect... Althought following quote has already been posted it is very important to cofirm my statement. Usually Gatsby is in shape, has everything planned, and knows what he is doing, but on the day he was supposed to meet Daisy he was "..pale as death, with his hands plunged like weights in his coat pockets, was standing in a pudle of water glaring tragically into my eyes." (p. 86). The reason of his nervousness is because of his feelings for Daisy! If Gatsby would just want to stay friends, he wouldn't have done everything he did before Daisy came into Nick's house (e.f. he wouldn't dress so nice, which he has done for her!), he just would not care! But instead "he had been full of the idea so long, dreamed it right through to the end, waited with his teeth set, so to speak, at an inconceivable pitch of intensity. Now, in the reaction, he was running down like an overwound clock." (p. 92) That clearly shows the situation when Gatsby is still in love with Daisy, but doesn't know if Daisy feels the same way about him. This is actually the last chance to get her back! That's why everything has to be perfect, he just knows that after this there is a small chance for them to meet again. I don't think it was necessary for Gatsby to show Daisy EVERYTHING he has. It was just too much! It screamed: 1. look what you lost! 2. If you are not in love with me any more, you are definitely GOING TO FALL in love with my posessions, and, you know, my posessions come in a package with me... Although he didn't have to show her any of things he has! He should find out, if Daisy (still)loves HIM and if she wants to come back because of HIM, like he is, not because of everything he HAS! See my point? At first there was a tension between Daisy and Gatsby, they have nothing to talk about even though they haven't seen each other for 5 yrs. Gatsby is also acting like "a little boy" (p. 88, by Nick) and the word "embarrassing" appeared more than few times... And last: we mentioned in the class that Gatsby is living The American Dream. Now he seems to offer Daisy the same way of life he has. So far this is working out good, because Daisy is amazed by Gatsby's wealthy living and how much he had achieved. Gatsby actually gives her a choice: a) to stay with her husband, be wealthy, have a family, and be unhappy or b) (prob. get divorced) come back to him, live a life of her dreams, have a family(he hasn't mentioned that, but he probably wouldn't be against it either), and be happy. Hopefully in next chapters we are going to see (read) how Daisy handled this situation.
Just wanted to let you know: the deleted comment was from me. I accidently published it instead of "previewing" and also couple of corrections were needed to be done. Sorry about that.
In chapter five, the plot shifts to the romance of Gatsby and Daisy. Gatsby's plan worked..Daisy went to Nicks house for tea. But ended up forgetting Nick was even there. At the "reunion", Gatsby was showing off hiis luxuries, hope that Daisy will change her mind about him. Honestly, I think Daisy will leave Tom for Gatsby. For some reason Daisy just seems like she's stupid..like she's gullable. What happened to Tom??? I still can't waiit to see how he would feel if he found out about all of this.??..
This chapter was guite interesting. In this chapter Daisy and Gatsby finally get to meet. Gatsby spent the day up until the meeting really nervous. Why wold he be nervous she should be the one that is nervous. But when they do meet at first things go wrong, but after a minute they start to warm up to things and Gatsby shows Daisy off his mansion and all his expensive things. Gatsby has Daisy in his mind as this very great girl but i dont really htink that she can live up to Gatsby expectations.
this chapter I think will be one of the most important. I saw a lot of references to time and they have significance. When Gatsby hit his head on the broken clock could've been there to symbolize how time had stopped with him in daisy. He is living in the past and he is getting set up to be disappointed. When it said that Daisy fell short or what he envisioned, I noticed that Gatsby had an idea of Daisy that was no longer true. Yet, his love for her blinds him and he is willing to look past them and be with her anyway. But Im sorry, she seems pretty stupid and too shallow and concerned with money. The way she was almost fawning over Gatsby's shirts was strange. But that let Gatsby know that if he is to keep her, he must show her his wealth.
The reunion. In Chapter 5, Gatsby and Daisy reunited. At first, Gatsby was really nervous about seeing Daisy for the first time in a long time. When Daisy got there they sat and talked about old times, etc. They even forgot Nick was there! Gatsby tries to throw his money and luxurious life in her face, thinking it will give her a reason to fall for him again. I think Daisy will be caught into Gatsby's trap and fall for him again.
chapter 5 was about the reunion. in this chapter gatsby wanted to please nick.i dont really understand why maybe because he wanted to show how much money he really had. daisy and gatsby cought eye first time they saw each other. gatsby was really starting to like her.
I agree with everyone else when they talk about Gatsby trying to please everyone so hard. It seems to me that Gatsby has been trying to please everyone throughout the book. I mean considering the fact that, that's why he developed this image of a wealthy lifestyle. He was trying to please Daisy in the beginning. He also tried to please the people that came to his parties because if he didn't have the money and wealth, they would not have come no matter what his personality was like. All they wanted was the money.
